AE Visual Reference Library: Transforms / Position
Written by Dean Velez

Various examples of the "Position" transform are shown here...this is a great resource for teachers and students.

I've decided to build my own little After Effects Visual Reference Library for when I'm teaching my motion graphics classes and post it here. This is in no way meant to replace the books out on the market when you are teaching...It's more of a visual complement to them.

There are several position examples below that you can play.

Some helpful shortcuts when dealing with position ( I'm doing these from a PC so the shortcuts might be different in some cases on a Mac...whenever it says CTRL switch that to CMND or Open Apple for the Mac )

P = Position
F9 = Easy Ease or look under the menu: Animation / Keyframe Assistant / Easy Ease
Shift F9 = Easy Ease In or look under the menu: Animation / Keyframe Assistant / Easy Ease In
Ctrl Shift F9 = Easy Ease Out or look under the menu: Animation / Keyframe Assistant / Easy Ease Out
Ctrl Alt K = Keyframe Interpolation or look under the menu: Animation / Keyframe Interpolation / Spatial Interpolation
Ctrl Alt O = Auto Orient Along Path or look under the menu: Layer / Transform / Auto Orient
J = Previous Keyframe
K = Next Keyframe
Home = Beginning of Timeline
End = End of Timeline

A. Jump to previous keyframe
B. Current keyframe at time marker "N". Add or delete keyframe at current time marker
C. Jump to next keyframe
D. Stopwatch: Enable property to accept keyframes
E. Position property
F. X position - horizontal movement
G. Y position - vertical movement
H. Z position - forward and backward movement in 3D space.
I. Enable layer to move in 3D space
J. Normal Keyframe
K. Easy Ease Out keyframe - slow out of keyframe
L. Easy Ease keyframe - slow in and out of keyframe
M. Easy Ease In - slow into keyframe
N. Current keyframe at time marker

A. Easy Ease In - notice the dots are closer in this area. This represents the speed being slower going into the keyframe.
B. Easy Ease Out - notice the dots are closer in this area. This represents the speed being slower going out of the keyframe.

A. Keyframe
B. Bezier Handle

If you would like to use the After Effects project shown below you can find it HERE

X position is a side to side movement

Y position is a up and down movement

Z position is a  forward and backward movement and can only be accessed by converting the layer into 3D

Easy Ease In starts fast and then slows down the speed of the layer going into the keyframe
The upper rocket has the Ease property added to it on the last keyframe

Easy Ease Out slows down the speed of the layer going out of the keyframe
The upper rocket has the Ease property added to it on the first keyframe

Easy Ease slows down the speed of the layer going in and out of the keyframe
The upper rocket has the Ease property added to it on the keyframe directly in the center of the animation

A Bezier Path or curved path can be made by adjusting the bezier handles on a position keyframe

Auto Orient forces the layer to continually rotate itself along a path.

By default position keyframes are bezier or curved you have to manually change there spatial interpolation to Linear if you want them to be straight.
